Dan Harrison, Ph.D.

Dan, a Choctaw born and raised in Oklahoma, has spent the past four decades attempting to put his thoughts to words, whether through song, poetry, or prose. He has taught writing for over two decades in three different countries and founded two different writing centers, one at a large public university in the Middle East and another at a smaller private special education school in the US. He is passionate about exploring the uniqueness of bodymind individuality, learning differences, disability, accessibility, and linguistic justice. Dan is a National Writing Project fellow and serves on the board of the Secondary School Writing Centers Association as well as on the Accessibility Committee of the International Writing Centers Association. Dan's home is now in Lynchburg, Virginia, with his wife, a local minister and civil rights advocate. The Narrative of Us is an online space where Dan introduces some of his written works, especially those that explore the intersection of reality and possibility, taking into  account the experiences of others in a collective narrative, i.e. a joint reading-of-the-world. It is Dan's hope that each person spends time and energy collaborating with other writing sojourners at this creative nexus where body and mind meet and authentic storytelling begins, together.

Neurospark-ing

Dr. Harrison uses the term neurospark as a way of referring to the "spark" within our bodymind makeup which makes us unique. Often considered idiosyncrasies, personality traits, or even neurodivergences, our different ways of being/acting are typically expressed through our natural bodymind uniqueness. So, embracing our neurodiversity includes neurospark-ing, that is, leaning into our bodymind differences rather than hiding them. When we affirm our individual ways of being as equally valid, we begin to construct a landscape that sees disability and neuro-difference as normal components of our collective human diversity. This can be particularly helpful when creating an environment where creativity and collaboration are the goal. Therefore, diversity becomes our strength and neurospark-ing a natural part of life.

Hey, don't hide your spark! Instead, let it shine.
